Walk & Talk Therapy
"Whenever I have found myself stuck in the ways I relate to things, I return to nature. It is my principal teacher, and I try to open my whole being to what it has to say. " Wynn Bullock
I offer a unique form of therapy called Walk and Talk Therapy which combines traditional talking therapy with the physical exercise of walking. Clients can receive the benefit from psychotherapy, while at the same time receiving the benefits of physical exercise—a potentially powerful two-in-one treatment.
The simple act of walking outside in nature while talking out life’s issues can often create an environment of possibility and change. Besides exercise's proven ability to combat depression, anxiety, insomnia, weight gain and other health and mental health conditions, combining it with therapy has other benefits. Walking alongside another committed and focussed person can gently encourage good regular exercise behaviour whilst also providing a bridge to actualising resolutions.
There are some people who become blocked or overwhelmed by the intimacy of therapy in a traditional therapeutic setting. Trauma survivors, for instance, often carry a lot of shame and may have created rigid walls to protect themselves. Directly facing the therapist with no outlets for their physical arousal may prove too intense for them at times. Meanwhile, people with attention-deficit disorders may have trouble sitting still. There's something about getting outside and moving that helps to relax and ease the therapeutic relationship.
The walk itself might well become a metaphor for a client's journey through life and each walk, with its unique encounters with plants and wildlife, moments of spontaneity and the simple experience of being present alongside another human being can re-open a greater potential for self healing.
